Seeds & Plants

Seeds.  You gotta have them, unless you are into cloning (and we aren't).  You could get seeds from your friend who likes to experiment with hybridization, but since there is no way to identify whether a seed will produce a female or a male plant, you're just asking for trouble.  We buy our seeds from various vendors, both local and online, to ensure we get a crop of females only.  Here's what we've found so far.

Online

Pacific Seed Bank - https://www.pacificseedbank.com?ref=49022

We just got our first shipment from PSB, and are looking forward to reporting on our success next year.  They have a great selection of feminized, auto-flowering and high CBD seeds.  The advantage to us is that PSB is located in Santa Rosa, California, so no pesky borders to cross means problem-free shipping.

True North Seed Bank -https://truenorthseedbank.com/

This is one of Grammy's favorite place to buy seeds. Canadian based, they offer seeds from 46 seedbanks from around the world.  You, too, can grow what the Dutch are growing.  Just their selection of feminized seeds gives you over 1300 seeds to choose from.

Canuk Seeds is also based in Canada and publishes a 50 page veritable Sear's Catalogue of its seed offerings.  If you've ever wanted to spend your Bitcoin, they accept it here.  https://www.canukseeds.com/

Seedmasters is located in England and can be found at: https://seedmasters.com/

Federal law prohibits getting your seeds from out-of-country sources (or any source).  If you are concerned about your seeds not making it past ICE, look for California-grown seeds from local outlets.  This may limit the selection of seeds.

Soil & Fertilizers

We're into growing our cannabis in large pots on the deck in the backyard, because that's where the most sun is.  But even if you have the right space for growing in ground, which we encourage, you still need some good soil and the right fertilizers.  Go organic!  Whatever goes into the plant goes into you, eventually.  Here are some thoughts on the matter.

Cannabis plants require a large amount of food over their lifecycle. Use natural and organic fertilizers available at garden stores like blood meal, bone meal, fish meal, bat guano, and kelp meal.  We use organic tomato fertilizer.

You can purchase nutrient solutions designed specifically for cannabis from your local grow shop or Amazon, but these are often expensive and can damage soil bacteria as they are generally composed of synthetic mineral salts and intended for indoor, soil-less growing.

For potting soil, we use E.B. Stone Big Harvest Garden Soil, which has the seal for CDMA Registered Organic Input Material (OIM), including aged redwood, aged fir bark, compost, dehydrated chicken manure, earthworm castings, bat guano, kelp meal and alfalfa meal.   At a nursery or Home Depot it costs about $11 for a 3 cubic foot bag.  We also use E. B. Stone Recipe 420 Potting Soil, also CDMA  Registered OIM, containing a blend of premium Aged Forest Products, Coir, Sphagnum Peat Moss, Pumice, Earthworm Castings, Feather Meal, Seabird Guano, Crab Meal, Fish Bone Meal, Humic Acid from Leonardite, Gypsum, Oystershell Lime (pH adjuster), Dolomite Lime (pH adjuster), Bat Guano, Kelp Meal and Wetting agent (Yucca Schidigera Saponin) enhanced with Mycorrhizal fungi.  We found it at Walter Andersen Nursery for $11.59 for a 1.5 cubic foot bag.

We fertilize with  Dr. Earth Organic Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer, with an N-P-K ratio of 4-6-3. It costs $9.94 for 4 lbs. and can be found at local nurseries and home improvement stores.  We also use E.B. Stone Tomato & Vegetable Food, with an N-P-K of 4-5-3, and a cost of $7.09 for 4 lbs.

Other organic soils and fertilizers

Let us know how you fare with these; we haven't tried them yet.

FoxFarm Ocean Forest Potting Soil, a  blend of premium earthworm castings, bat guano, and seagoing fish and crab meal, composted forest humus, sandy loam, and sphagnum peat moss. Costs $36 for 1.5 cubic feet.

FoxFarm Happy Frog Potting Soil, same as Ocean Forest, but without the crab meal and fish emulsion; contains mycorrhizal fungi and humic acid.  Costs $34 for 2 cubic feet.

During the flowering phase, you might try Dr. Earth Flower Girl Organic Bud & Bloom Fertilizer, with an N-P-K of 3-9-4.  It contains a blend of fish bone meal, alfalfa meal, feather meal, soft rock phosphate and mined potassium sulfate, and is OMRI (Organic Material Review Institute) and Non-GMO Project Verified. Costs $10.68 for 4 lbs.

Non-organic fertilizers

Most of these are formulated for commercial indoor grow operations, mostly hydroponic growers, but can also be used with soil in different strengths.  They can all be found online, via Amazon, and some may be in local nurseries. We think these are unnecessary and costly for the casual backyard grower, but feel free to knock yourself out and report back.

Humboldts Secret Base A & B  - a two-part system for the vegetative and flowering stages; Base A (vegetative) N-P-K is 4-0-1; Base B (flowering) is 1-4-2.  It comes in liquid form and sells for $99.97 a gallon.

Humboldts Secret Sweet & Sticky - for use during the flowering phase, it contains molasses (hence, the sticky). Costs $64.97 a gallon.

Fox Farm Grow Big Liquid Concentrate  - use during the vegetative phase; N-P-K of 6-4-4. $55 a gallon.

Fox Farm Big Bloom Liquid Concentrate - used during the flowering phase; N-P-K of 0.01-0.5-0.7.  $18 for a quart.
